FILE DATA RETENTION

Keep what you must. Find what you should not keep.

What file data retention involves.

A data retention policy says how long each type of record must be kept and when it must go. For files, the hard part is not the policy. It is knowing where every copy lives, which rule applies to it, and whether anything is under a legal hold.

Only 34% of organizations know where all their data is, according to the Thales 2026 Data Threat Report. Diskover builds that picture from rich metadata, such as owner, location, and age, for every file, on every system, without opening a single file.

Diagram: a four-step governance loop: find every file, flag likely sensitive and expired files, act, and record every action.

Find, flag, act, prove.

Find. Act. Record.

FIND AND FLAG

Diskover indexes every system in place and flags likely sensitive files and files past retention from metadata.

ACT BY POLICY

Retain, hold, move to the immutable storage you choose, or delete. Each policy shows the matching files before it runs.

RECORD

Every action is logged with the file, the policy, and the time. The next scan starts the loop again.
